Description of Classes
Kokushiryu Jujutsu
This educational system and lifetime sport, created by Professor Nobuyoshi Higashi, is derived from the fighting style of the ancient Samurai Warriors. The "mother" of Japanese martial arts, jujutsu consists of punches, blocks, kicks, throws, chokes, holds, grappling and joint techniques. Benefits include improved coordination and focus, as well as the development of strength and body fitness. In addition, younger students learn discipline, respect and how to work with others while developing self-esteem and confidence.

Kokushi Karate
This classical Japanese martial arts system is an excellent means of physical conditioning. Consisting of all traditional punches, blocks and kicks, Kokushi Karate builds strength, develops flexibility, aids in cardiovascular health, and improves coordination and balance. Students learn in increments what they are able to handle. They become disciplined and focused as their self reliance grows.

The Instructors
Hanshi Bill and Sensei Karen Palmer have been teaching martial arts at the YMCA and at numerous schools in Manhattan since 1974. Their adult self-defense classes at McBurney YMCA was listed in New York Magazine as one of the ten best in NYC. As professor at the Kokushi Budo Institute, Hanshi Bill Palmer is a 8th degree black belt in Kokushiryu Jujutsu and a Certified International Referee. He holds the highest rank awarded and is the only one to achieve the distinctive title of Hanshi. Karen holds a 6th degree black belt and is certified as a Continental Referee. Both also study Judo, Kokushi Karate and Tomiki Aikido in which Bill is a Certified National Referee. Author of three critically acclaimed books, their most recent - The Encyclopedia of Martial Art Movies - was reprinted as a trade paperback in the Spring of 2003.
